Twinning and Sister Cities
Salisbury and the City Council are extremely proud to be twinned with Saintes in South West France and Xanten in Germany as well as having sister cities in North Carolina and Maryland USA.
All our twinned and sister cities are wonderful places to visit, offering a wide array of differing cultures and attractions, and you are guaranteed a very warm welcome if you mention you are visiting from Salisbury, England! Please use the links within our website to gather more information about these places or how to get more involved with the Twinning Association in Salisbury.
Salisbury has been formally twinned with Saintes in south-west France since 1990. There have been countless visits between the two communities since then, all of which have helped to establish firm friendships and provide a basis for future contacts.
With a wide variety of celebrations planned to mark the 21st anniversary of the official signing of the twinning document in Salisbury there are plenty of reasons for residents of South Wiltshire to become involved.
Twinning, or partnership, in both Salisbury and Saintes is viewed as a means of fostering cultural, sporting, educational and commercial links between both communities. Whether those links happen to focus on singing or on golf, on rugby or on painting, on cycling or on accountancy, there are always opportunities for developing shared interests and improving language skills. We also focus particularly on encouraging young people and so links have been set up between schools in both towns.
We all know that Salisbury is rich in interesting historical buildings that attract thousands of visitors every year, but fewer people know about the magnificent Roman arch in Saintes, its amazing amphitheatre and its proximity to La Rochelle. It is also on the ancient pilgrim route. Perhaps now is the time to visit, especially if you have children who are studying French.
Join the Salisbury Saintes Twinning Association and we are always happy to put you in touch with twinners in the Charente-Maritime who will be delighted to show you round and extend the hand of friendship. We also hold social events in Salisbury at which members can find out more about Saintes and about twinning activities.
About the City of Saintes
Saintes is a commune in south-western France and is located on the banks of the Charente River, between La Rochelle and Bordeaux. The town is divided in several administrative areas (La Fenêtre, Recouvrance, Les Tourneurs, Les Boiffiers, Sain-Vivien, Saint-Pierre, Gare-Abbaye, Bellevue, La Récluse et S. De Bouard).
A commune is the lowest level of administrative division in the French Republic. French communes have no exact equivalent in the United Kingdom, having a status somewhere in between that of English districts and civil parishes. A French commune can be a city of two million inhabitants as in Paris; a town of ten thousand people – or just a ten-person hamlet.
Xanten Twinning Association "Partnerschaftsverein Xanten e.V."
Salisbury has been twinned with Xanten since 2005 when a formal Twinning Agreement was signed by the Mayors of both cities at the Guildhall. This was followed a month later by a reciprocal ceremony in Xanten, and completed the 3-way link between Salisbury, Xanten & Saintes.
Since then a large number of civic, school and cultural exchanges have taken place.
The Salisbury Xanten Twinning Association (SXTA)
The Twinning Association exists to foster social, cultural, commercial, sporting, educational and civic relations between our two cities. It was established in 2006 and completed a 3 way link with the French town of Saintes. Xanten lies on the west bank of the Rhine only 30km from the Dutch border, has a population of about 25,000 and has many similarities with Salisbury. It was an important Roman garrison and has a huge archaeological park covering 200 acres with a new museum and many partially restored buildings. The medieval walled town was built to the south, and after serious damage in 1945, has been very sympathetically rebuilt. It has the largest cathedral on the continent north of Cologne and many fine buildings, as well as first rate leisure facilities including a full range of water sports on 2 large lakes.
The SXTA organises regular coach trips to Xanten in the October half term of odd years. The Germans come here in June in even years. In addition there are many other visits by school parties, sports clubs and musical groups including Salisbury Area Young Musicians as well as many visits by families and individuals. The drive only takes about 5 hours from Calais. The Mayor of Xanten is always invited to Mayor Making and the Mayor of Salisbury usually pays a reciprocal visit.
Meetings of the SXTA are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30 at The Pheasant Inn, Salt Lane when anyone is welcome. Please visit the website www.salisburyxantentwinningassociation.wordpress.com for more details. Further information about events and membership can be obtained from the Chairman Chris Hewitt on 01722 339578 or email the Secretary at email@example.com
